My name is Shelby. I’m currently a junior at Eastern Washington University, pursuing my BA in Communication Studies with a concentration in Public Relations.
That wasn’t always the case. Before college, I was enlisted in the United States Navy and served for twelve years in a variety of roles – and I probably would have stayed there until retirement. Life had other plans, however, and my career came to an unexpected end. I had an honorable discharge and no clue of what to do at that point. You can’t always choose what happens to you, but you can choose how you react – so I chose to treat this as an opportunity instead of an obstacle and to use this chance to apply my life experience to something I’m passionate about.
I’ve loved space exploration since I was small. I stayed up late to listen to news broadcasts about the latest mission launches, a habit that I continued once I got out of the military. (My favorite active mission? Cassini.) One thing I noticed is that while we’re up to some amazing things in terms of space exploration, it doesn’t make the news unless it’s something really big – and even then, it rarely makes a significant impression. That’s slowly starting to change, but I know that a publicist with enthusiasm and talent can help move the field forward to the prominence it deserves.
So that’s where I come in! I’ve landed an internship with Orbital ATK over the summer and will be sharing what I can about that here. This is only the start of an amazing story and I hope that you’ll come along for the ride.
